When we talk about student-athletes, most people think of the movie version of a full scholarship. The talented kid is lifted out of unfortunate circumstances and goes on to triumphantly play at their top college. Worries about bills, buying food, and paying rent are gone. And while it makes a great movie; it's not real life.
Reports show that 85% of student-athletes with full-ride scholarships live in poverty. This doesn't even touch walk-on players. And those same students are not only spending excessive amounts of time practicing, working out, traveling, and playing—they're also attending class, studying, getting help, and completing assignments. The question becomes, where does the student-athlete fit in a paying job?
And while the student-athlete may be struggling to provide basic necessities—scholarship or not—athletic programs are able to use their faces, jersey numbers, and hard work to continue to help fund university athletic programs. In the past, student-athletes, under the NCAA's amateur policy, had no opportunity to benefit from their own success.
Recent court rulings have changed everything. Athletes can now partner with businesses and organizations to make money from their NIL.
In the race for partnerships, money, and collaborations, most NIL organizations are haphazard at best. Very few NIL platforms are professionalized or sustainable. They are focused on large, one-off payments to players, through major donations from individual boosters.
We're doing it differently. The Matador Club is professionally managed and operated as a business, with focus on raising sustainable, recurring gifts from the Texas Tech alumni and booster base. The Matador Club is oriented toward all student-athletes, rather than catering to high profile players.
We're creating big dreams and bright futures for Tech athletes and community orgs. The Matador Club is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization focused on the well-being of our community. We create avenues for Texas Tech student-athletes to make a positive impact with their name, image, and likeness.
